El Sobrante Stroll
The first Stroll was held in 1994. It was the dream of a handful of local Chamber business people-with the purpose in mind of helping to acquaint our community with the services available within our own local business districts. It was a giant step for our small chamber to undertake, but it was a means of helping our home town small businesses survive in the wake of large shopping centers threatening our existence. It worked - our Stroll has now become a joint venture with many of our neighboring cities, growing from our first year with 2,000 strollers to 25,000 last year and we are determined to keep on Growing and Strolling!
Parade is held at 11:00 am and Stroll until 4:00 pm. San Pablo Dam Road from Appian Way to EI Portal Drive will be closed from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. Many stages for Music, Food Courts, as well as local restaurants and businesses open for your pleasure. The Pedaler Bike Shop professional bike show, 200 Craft and Information booths, Children's Playland, Classic Car Shows, Sheriff & Fire Dept. displays, demonstrations, schools, churches and organizations represented. Bring your blankets and chairs and reserve your spot. Everyone loves a parade - Marching Bands, all branches of the Armed Services are represented, with over 200 participants - something for everyone! EI Sobrante at its best!
Marie Carayanis, one of the organizers with the El Sobrante Chamber of Commerce stated "As shopping centers popped up in El Sobrante, local merchants began to feel threatened. So, we decided we needed to do something to promote our downtown business district, which mostly was made up of mom-and-pop family businesses. It was the dream of a handful of local Chamber businesspeople whose purpose was to help acquaint our community with the services available within our own local business districts. It was a giant step for our small Chamber to undertake, but it was a means of helping our hometown small businesses survive with the new, large shopping centers threatening our existence. Attendance grew from about 1,000 in the first year to about 20,000." Our goal in presenting this annual event is to promote community awareness, not only for within our EI Sobrante Valley, but that of our surrounding neighbors, and thus encourage the support of all of our local Business Districts.
Free parking is available at the Park and Ride lot at Interstate 80 and Hilltop Drive, and the El Sobrante Boys & Girls Club on Appian Way, with a free shuttle running from the event to both locations.
SOBRANTE STROLL 2024
San Pablo Dam Road came alive Sunday with the 29th annual El Sobrante Stroll, a cherished local street festival that celebrates the community’s spirit and diversity. The stroll has grown into a signature event for the region, offering a vibrant mix of entertainment, food and local culture.
Residents and visitors alike flocked to the festival. Donald Bastin, a local historian and longtime participant, said the festival is important in connecting locals and people from the area to El Sobrante.
“It gives us a chance to get people acquainted with who we are,” said Bastin, author of “El Sobrante (Images of America).” “You know, there is the creek society, and a lot of people don’t know that we live right on a creek.” (That’s San Pablo Creek.)

He also helps people get to know the area by promoting the El Sobrante Historical Society and the local creek watershed preservation group, Spawners. Attendees also enjoyed a variety of activities, among them viewing classic and customized cars and a BMX bike show and shopping local businesses and sampling diverse cuisines at the booths lining the walk. The theme of the Stroll this year was “Take A Stroll On The Wild Side” and fun was had by all. Not only did we have great weather, but we had all sorts of entertainment, a great parade and some pretty darn nice classic cars in the car show! We are looking forward to the 30th Annual El Sobrante Stroll next year.

Over 20,000 visitors attended this year’s El Sobrante Stroll and enjoyed a great parade, fabulous food and drinks, got information from over a dozen community organizations and shopped at 100 booths. A HUGE THANK YOU to the volunteers, the vendors and organizations who had booths, all the Car Show participants and to the community who turned out on a beautiful day (truly Chamber of Commerce weather!) We all had a great time with our neighbors. No wonder we ❤️ El Sobrante!
2023 Sobrante Stroll
This year's 28th annual incarnation of the event which took place on Sunday, September 17th from 11am to 4pm on San Pablo Dam Road—and typically brings out about 20,000 people—kicks off with a parade with marching bands and horses at 11 a.m. (starts in front of Walgreens), followed by the something-for-everyone Stroll until 4 p.m. The event is hosted by the El Sobrante Chamber of Commerce and is organized by volunteers.
On hand to enjoy that day at the Stroll will be more than 200 vendors, businesses, local food, hands-on crafts and live musical entertainment by Downtown Rhythm at Kaliente’s parking lot, as well as two shows—a Custom & Classic Car Show and also a professional BMX Bike Show hosted by The Pedaler Bike Shop at 3826 San Pablo Dam Rd.

Our first Stroll, since the pandemic hit: Sunday, September 18, 2022. It was cold, windy and rainy! But people showed up as usual, the parade went on as scheduled, and everyone had a good, soggy time!
And for all you custom car fans, there will also be a Car Show at the Stroll.

The dancing horses are always a treat.
El Sobrante has always been a town of horse lovers, and this proud horsewoman recalls the days of the Mexican ranchos.
